8 Ways You Can Save On Healthcare Costs

We get it, healthcare is expensive. Keep reading for 8 ways you can lower your healthcare costs and get the care that you need!

1.       Keep up-to-date on your annual physicals. This is by far the easiest way to lower your healthcare costs. Annual physicals are considered preventive exams that are most likely covered by your insurance plan. It is a free visit, once a year, to raise any health concerns that you might have, take a look at your blood results, and get refills on prescriptions.

2.       Avoid the Emergency Department. It might seem obvious but the Emergency Department is the most expensive form of healthcare out there and we want to help you avoid it. This means go to the doctor before you actually NEED the doctor. By keeping up on your annual physicals, your provider and you can catch things before they become an issue. It is also important to call your doctor when you notice that something is off. Try not to wait until your symptoms are extreme to do something about it.

3.       Go shopping!  When the time comes for you to get imaging or labs done, make sure the facility you are going to is within your insurance network and has the lowest costs. There might be two hospitals across the street from one another but one could cost twice as much as the other. If you can, call ahead of time and ask what their costs will be. This will help you make an informed decision.

4.       Utilize telehealth visits.  Telehealth visits are quick and cost effective! Most insurance companies now cover telehealth visits in their healthcare plans. They are great for follow ups, med checks, allergies, and sick visits. If your insurance does not cover telehealth visits, our office provides them for $40. (Bonus: you can also save on gas and the frustration of trying to find parking!)

5.       Use a preferred pharmacy. Many insurance plans now have preferred pharmacies such as mail order pharmacies that are cheaper for you to use. You might even see a difference in using Wal-Mart instead of Walgreens.  It is important to find out what these might be so you can save on prescription costs.

6.       Use coupons. Companies such as Goodrx.com allow you to search for your prescription online and find the best costs for you by using their coupons. They are free of charge and might be cheaper than your insurance plan.

7.       Get a referral from your PCP. The best way you can ensure you are getting the best and most affordable care for you and your family is to see your Primary Care Provider.  They are going to be the best place to start for any health issues. If your condition warrants a referral, you can be sure you are sent to someone that is within your network which will lower your costs significantly.

8.       Take care of your body! Prevention is the key to any health condition and it all starts by living a healthy lifestyle. Make sure you are moving everyday and eating a diet that is full of whole foods such a vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole-grains. Your body with thank you later!
